I have been an interventional radiologist for most of my professional life. I have seen amazing developments in medical technology that now provide diagnostic procedures and treatments that are more effective and less invasive than ever. However, what has not changed is the fearful, anxious patient at the center of all this, needing pain management and in great distress. I have dedicated my career to improving the experience of patients having medical procedures.
I used to tell my trainees that you are only as good as your patients' overall well-being. It doesn't matter if you are a brilliant thinker and a virtuoso of technology and technique. if your patient suffers, has complications, doesn't recover well, or believes that you don't understand, you've lost the battle.
When I first saw how well hypnosis can alleviate a patient's distress right on the procedure table, I decided that this is what I want to learn, research and teach. That was 18 years ago. Since then we have completed three large prospective randomized studies and shown that a quick hypnotic induction at the beginning of the patient encounter - without patient preparation and without props - reduces pain, anxiety, procedure time, cost, and complications. Based on these findings, we have developed and refined a course to teach health care professionals how to use these simple techniques.
My dream is that one day any patient who enters a hospital or doctor's office will be able to receive procedural hypnosis for better outcomes.
